Until recently, the only way to keep a toddler safe while travelling by air was to carry a car seat on the airplane. That meant carrying a small child and a heavy car seat throughout the airport and struggling to get the car seat attached properly once on the plane.

Parents now have a safe, easier alternative. CARES (child airline restraint system) is a simple strap that attaches to the existing passenger safety belt on airplanes creating a five point harness for children. It was designed for use on board aircraft and has recently been approved by Transport Canada.

The CARES device is specifically designed for children ages 1 to 4 and weighing between 10-20 kg (22-44 pounds) and whose height is 100 cm (40 inches) or less. The device itself weighs only one pound and is small enough to fit into a purse or carry-on.
